Midnightsun stories
Posted on June 23rd, 2009 No commentsOne of our projects which we will do is called MIDNIGHTSUN. We will stream the local midnightsun in realtime to the city of Linz/Austria where the sun will appear on the media facade of the Ars Electronica Center when the local sun in Linz leaves for the evening.
The camera was mounted about a month ago on top of Saana mountain on an antenna of the Digita phone company and is connected to the network of the biological research station via a wlan bridge.
When I arrived last week I had to find out the hard way that a storm was moving the antenna of the subscriber unit on top of the mountain which resulted in a heavy signal loss, so we barely have a connection with the camera now. we need to wait a few days for the technician of the phone company to arrive as we are not able to climb up the mast ourselves (obviously).
What I sum up here was a process of several days to find out what really happened including a 7 hour walk up to the antenna and down again. Our guide was Oula the stations technician and who is immensely supportive. On the way he drove his car a bit to rough and we ended up with a broken oilfilter – well he has 4 cars so it did not bother him to much ;-) .
here a few impressions of the walk and pics of the dammed antenna thingy out of angle:
- Antenna at the biologocal research station (on the very right mast)
- Oula adjusting the uplink, you can see on the left top of the mountain the other antenna
- breakdown
- and up the hill
- scenery
- finally there
- hmm
- damned thing rotated
- finally downhill

visiting Leena & Oula
Posted on June 21st, 2009 No commentsThis afternoon we all were invited to visit Leena and Oula Valkeapää. Both of them are included in our 4-day program on the first day the 15th of July. Oula is a reindeer herder living with Leena, who is an artist and researcher. They live behind 15-minute boat ride across a small lake.
This is Leenas and Oulas house inside/outside. Simply, beautiful place.
This is Oulas fathers house and Noppe, the dog.The village

Fishing
Posted on June 20th, 2009 No commentsI just came home from my first fishing trip here on the Kilpisjärvi together with Ada. It was a total success, we broke one rod (i ll never buy a cheap one again), I lost two of my favorite baits and Ada fell into the water.
The pictures show our fishing water and the entrance to a German Bunker from WWII. The Germans came back then via Norway (landed with ships at Skibotten close to Tromso) and made their way from here to Russia, so not only Austria has German thought up and Slave build roads.
